Goal setting is a very important skill and it should be learned by people of all ages. In fact setting goals and achieving them is a fundamental requirement of life. If one is unable to set goals, there is very little chance that he will be able to tread the path to success.
Teaching goal setting becomes extremely important to children and student of all ages, for the simple reason that the sooner they learn, the faster they will be able to apply it to their own life.
Help them Understand Why they Need This Skill
Before you get down to the basics of teaching goal setting to your students, help them understand why it is so important for them to possess this skill. Begin by telling them what it means and entails. How will it help them in their life? What will they be able to achieve with this skill?
Take care to set the context according to the age of the students you are targeting. The situations you talk about need to be within their scope of understanding.
Breaking Goals into Tiny Steps
Once they understand the importance of learning goal setting skills, teach your students how to break the goals into tiny, manageable steps. It’s like laying a brick each day towards a new destination. Make them understand that in order to achieve something, it needs to be broken down into practical and small steps.
Pay particular attention to the basic steps of goal setting, the first steps in starting a project. These could be the most difficult for a student to formulate. In case you come across a step that looks particularly impossible, you should nudge your students into thinking of an alternative.
Fighting Obstacles
An important aspect of teaching goal setting is preparing them for obstacles that are bound to come in their way. Problem solving and tackling unforeseen obstacles is a very important part of goal setting. In fact, you should tell them the value of anticipating potential problems and planning in advance for them. They should also be made to realize that there is no escaping these problems, and they, in fact, test the true mettle of an individual.
Another clip from the movie “Public Enemies” though this section of the movie never happened in real life it is still fun to watch. The reason for this not being able to happen is because while Dillinger was planning to break these people out he ended up getting arrested. Though Dillinger was arrested his gang still broke out due to the gun he smuggled in.
